5 Euro Silver Guten Rutsch Coin SU

“Guten Rutsch!” – this simple German phrase, which means something like “have a good slide!”, expresses a sense of moving into the future with a certain energy. But what does it really refer to? A good journey? A dynamic start? Or just good luck for the coming twelve months? The origin of this idiom is not entirely clear. It may derive from an old meaning of the word “Rutsch”, which once referred to a journey or trip. Which would be quite fitting: the new year, too, is a journey whose destination is unknown.

This high-quality, embossed, nonagonal 5-euro New Year’s coin for 2027, made of silver, is a particularly beautiful way to convey this wish. Whether you think of it as a lucky charm, a thoughtful gift to mark the New Year, or a special piece for your own collection, it marks the start of 2027 with a message that never goes out of style: may you be off to a good start in the New Year! Sometimes you don’t need any grand resolutions at all, a little optimism, confidence and composure are often all it takes. It’s full speed ahead for whatever the future may hold!

Two words... and a good start

Whether we’re having a toast with a glass of sparkling wine, listening to the Danube Waltz or giving someone a lucky charm – as the year draws to a close, we observe little rituals that express great hope for the future. In Spain, twelve grapes are said to bring good luck for the twelve months of the year, while in Denmark people ring in the New Year by jumping off a chair. What about here in Austria? We wish each other a “guten Rutsch”. However different these regional customs may be, they all have one thing in common: looking forward to what is yet to come.

The turn of the year doesn’t have to be a spectacular fresh start. We can think of it as an invitation to take the good things with us, to let go of our burdens, and to face what lies ahead with an open heart. After all, a “guter Rutsch” isn’t about getting to the finish line as quickly as possible. Sometimes, simply being able to travel at a leisurely pace can represent happiness in itself.
