Whether it is about feelings of love, desire or friendship, forbidden messages or unspeakable things: flowers have always been used as a language. Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, who had already reported on "communication with the help of flowers" in letters from Istanbul a century earlier, is regarded as a pioneer. In the Orient, she came across a sophisticated system of meanings that were attributed to individual flowers.

In 1819, the Frenchwoman Charlotte de Latour, inspired by Lady Montagu's writings, published the book "Langage des fleurs".
